In May 2020, the Social Relief Distress grant was launched for the first time. It was the first large-scale social security program to be implemented during the pandemic. As of 2020, millions of unemployed people have received monthly relief payments (SRD). President Cyril Ramaphosa revealed in this year’s State of the Union address that the support will reach approximately 7.8 million people.
SRD Grant Extended But Remains Valued At R350
According to the Department for Social Development (DSD), inflation has eaten away at the value of this grant. At a time when the country is in a cost of living crisis caused by rising food and fuel prices, households are forced to make difficult choices.

Despite this, Social Development estimates that the grant has been extended until March 2024, but it remains at R350 and it is a temporary grant. According to DSD Minister Lindiwe Zulu, no agreement has yet been reached on what support will replace the interim agreement when it expires.
The Black Sash, Lobby group advocated for social grants to rise at least at the rate of inflation, without falling below the food poverty line. Currently, social development is exploring ways to introduce more sustainable interventions designed to meet people’s needs. working age population.

To be eligible for SRD, you must be a South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee, unemployed and not receiving any income or support. In addition, applicants must prove their identity, residence and income.
