SASSA Increase 2024 Payment Dates
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is responsible for distributing grants and allowances to disadvantaged people in South Africa. If you’re a SASSA beneficiary or know someone who is, here are the payment dates for March 2024:
- Older Persons Grants: Tuesday, 5 March 2024.
- Disability Grants: Wednesday, 6 March 2024.
- Children’s Grants: Thursday, 7 March 2024.

South African Social Security Agency Increase 2024
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana, during his 2024 Budget Speech, announced plans to increase SASSA social grants. These adjustments aim to mitigate the impact of inflation on beneficiaries and expand access for eligible individuals. However, it’s important to note that these changes do not apply to the Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD Grant), commonly known as the R350 grant.
Here are the official grant increases for 2024:
- Older Persons Grants: A R100 raise for old age, war veterans, disability, and care dependency grants. This increase will be effective from April (R90) and October (additional R10).
- Foster Care Grant: A R50 boost for the foster care grant.
- Child Support Grant: A R20 uptick for the child support grant.
The National Treasury projects a surge in SASSA social grant expenditure (excluding the SRD grant), with projected expenditure increasing from R217.1 billion in 2023/24 to R259.3 billion in 2026/27. In addition, the government allocates R33.6 billion for the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant in 2024/25.
Minister Godongwana also assured ongoing efforts to enhance the COVID-19 relief grant by April, within the existing fiscal framework. The number of SASSA grant beneficiaries (excluding those receiving the COVID-19 SRD Grant) is expected to rise from 18.8 million in 2023/24 to 19.7 million in 2026/27.
