How to Open a Bank Account for SASSA Grants Recipients

SASSA grants recipients are urged to open bank accounts for faster and more secure payments.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has gone through a number of changes in recent years. Recently, the government agency has advised some of its clients to adopt a new payment method to access their funds.

The instructions are below for members who can’t renew their Gold Cards due to closed Post Offices or Post Offices that don’t have cards:

  1. Open up a Bank Account..if you already have one..get 3 months statements.
  2. You can download the Banking Form from Sassa.gov.za..or Go to Nearest Sassa Office to fetch Banking Form
  3. Take Banking Form to Bank and have it filled in and stamped.
  4. Take Banking Form with 3 months statements(if old account)..back to a Sassa Office.

How to Open a Bank Account for SASSA Grants Recipients

These are the steps that SRD beneficiaries ought to follow to add or change banking details:

  1. Visit the SRD website at srd.sassa.gov.za.
  2. Scroll down to the “How do I change my banking details” section
  3. Insert your ID number
  4. An SMS containing the Sassa banking details link will be sent to the mobile phone number used when registering for the SRD application.
  5. Open the banking details link in the SMS 
  6. Capture Bank name.
  7. Capture Account type.
  8. Capture Account number.
  9. Click Submit.

Sassa has also confirmed that they don’t pay a beneficiary’s grant into another person’s bank account.

Sassa must verify that the banking account belongs to you, so there will be a delay in payment if done late. You can change your payment method after grant payment.
