Introduction

Overview ATNS is offering two (2) bursaries for students to train towards a career in the aviation industry as a Target Generating Officer (TGO). What is the main role of a Target Generating Officer? • Support operational training by simulating live scenarios for controllers in order to enhance and maintain their ATC skill. The TGO is the pilot in the equation. • Create and program training exercises and ensure alignment with the live operational environment. • Maintaining operational data and documentation to ensure readiness for disaster recovery. • Training of new operational technology, systems and procedures that are earmarked for operational deployment. • Overall support of all training initiatives including for external clients.

Job description

What does the bursary programme include?

The training bursary provides each bursar with an opportunity to conduct their studies at the ATNS Aviation Training Academy (ATA) based in Bonaero Park, Johannesburg.

The following is offered as part of the bursary programme:

  • Accommodation, on a sharing basis, at a guest lodge arranged by the ATNS ATA
  • Transport to and from the ATNS ATA, as per study and practical requirements
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner daily
  • A monthly allowance
  • 10 days of non-academic activities as determined by the study programme co-ordinators

Selection Process

1.    Personality Assessment

  • The personality assessment will show us the likelihood of you being able to do well in the specific role and is the first step in the process.

2.    Ability testing (various tests at different stages)

Candidates identified for the TGO bursary will need to take the following tests:

o  English reading and comprehension skills

o  Mathematical problem solving

o  Detail perception

o  Spatial reasoning

o  Diagramming (following instructions using diagram)

3.    Candidates meeting the required assessment criteria will be invited to a panel interview

4.    Upon successful completion of the panel interview, candidates will be required to undergo a mandatory medical assessment and verification.

5.    Upon successful completion of all the above, candidates may be offered a bursar contract.

Bursary Programme Outline

There are 3 main phases of the program:

  • Core Content Course – a theory-based foundation course over a 21 week period
  • ATS Rating Course – a practical based course the supplements your theory training
  • ATS Validation – a practical module of On-the-Job-Training

The Core Content and ATS Rating courses are hosted at our ATA in Gauteng.

The monthly allowance will apply during these courses.

The ATS validation training will be either at OR Tambo International or the Cape Town International airport. 

  • During this time, the bursar is placed on a fixed term contract
  • No longer eligible for company accommodation, transport and so on.
  • Medical aid and pension are not provided as benefits during this contract period.

Minimum requirements for the bursary:

Applicants must:

  • Be a minimum of 18-years-old for commencement of the Bursary
  • Have Grade 12 with pure Mathematics and English (HG D or SG C or level 4 upwards)
  • Be a South African citizen
  • Be medically fit
  • Attach Grade 12 results.
  • Be willing to relocate anywhere in the country.
