Court Interpreter Vacancies (X5 Posts) – Department of Justice and Constitutional Development

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development is inviting applications for five Court Interpreter positions at various courts across South Africa. This opportunity is ideal for candidates who are fluent in multiple languages and interested in working within the country’s justice system.

Court Interpreter Salary

Successful candidates will receive a salary ranging from R228 321 to R268 950 per year.
All appointed candidates will also be required to sign a performance agreement as part of the employment conditions.

  • Magistrate Office: Kuilsriver (Blue Downs) (Western Cape) – Ref No: 29/2026/WC (1 Post)
  • Magistrate Office: Worcester (Western Cape) – Ref No: 30/2026/WC (1 Post)

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for the Court Interpreter positions, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 qualification
  • Proficiency in English and at least one indigenous South African language
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

Language Requirements by Centre

  • Bethlehem: IsiZulu, Sesotho, English, and Afrikaans
  • Mmabatho: Setswana, Afrikaans, IsiZulu, IsiXhosa, or English

Added Advantages

The following will strengthen your application:

  • At least three months of practical interpreting experience
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to interpret sign language or foreign languages

Applicants may also be required to complete a language proficiency test as part of the selection process.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be responsible for supporting court proceedings by ensuring accurate interpretation and documentation. Duties include:

  • Interpreting during Criminal, Civil, Labour, and quasi-judicial court proceedings
  • Providing interpretation during consultations between legal professionals and clients
  • Translating legal documents and court exhibits
  • Recording cases in the criminal record book
  • Preparing case records for Magistrates and Prosecutors
  • Maintaining and updating court statistics and records
