President Ramaphosa: SRD R350 Grant kept millions out of poverty. The President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Monday evening and stated that the Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD R350), which was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, has kept millions of people out of poverty, and continues to provide assistant for those who are unemployed.

President Ramaphosa On SRD R350 Grant

When Springboks won the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, many South Africans were anticipating that the following day or Monday be declared as a public holiday by the President in order to celebrate the success of the Rugby Team.

When president announced a public holiday to celebrate the victory, he also used the opportunity to speak about the impact of social support programmes in the country. SRD R350 Grant being one of social programmes which is implemented in 2020.

Ramaphosa says that the R350 grant has been a financial assistant for millions of individuals living under a poverty line.

”The special SRD Grant known as the R350 grant, which we introduced in 2020, has kept millions of people out of poverty and continues to provide much-needed support for those who are unemployed.”

A social grant refers to grants paid by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) that is, disability grant; a grant for older persons and a war veteran’s grant; foster child grant; care dependency grant; child support grant and a grant-in-aid.

The Social Relief of Distress Grant has become an important source of income for over 8 Million of individuals in South Africa.
