Junior Lecturer: Voigt Chair

Organization: Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering

The Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University (SU) is well established in the fields of structural mechanics, noise and vibration, mechanical design, mechatronics, energy systems, heat transfer and thermo-fluid dynamics (including renewable energy).

Duties

  • A position, aimed at training a young, South African, academic staff member, is available.
  • The incumbent will have to register for their PhD (part-time) in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering at SU
  • at the first available opportunity after joining the Department. The incumbent¿s chosen PhD field of study must be in the field of thermofluid systems.
  • The incumbent will typically spend three days per week on PhD studies.
  • Two days per week will be devoted to work in the Department that can include academic and/or technical support.
  • This departmental work will not necessarily be related to the PhD research, but must be in support of the Voigt Chair in Thermofluid Systems Modelling.

Requirements

  • An ECSA accredited BEng or BSc(Eng) degree in mechanical or mechatronic engineering, or equivalent;
  • A MEng (research) degree in mechanical or mechatronic engineering, or equivalent, OR proof that the candidate is registered for the degree. If the degree is not yet awarded, a copy of the final submitted thesis must be provided three days before the oral interview. Proof of submission must also be provided;
  • Good communication and teaching skills;
  • The ability to effectively teach in English;
  • Good interpersonal skills;
  • Proven research skills.

Lecturer (Intermediate Phase): isiXhosa Language Education and Literacy

Organization: Department of Curriculum Studies

Duties

  • Teaching intermediate phase isiXhosa language education and literacy from first to fourth year level in the Bachelor of Education (BEd) undergraduate programmes;
  • Teaching and learning of isiXhosa as home language, First or Second Additional Languages, to preservice teachers, both in the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes;
  • Designing and reviewing or revising curricula or module guides for teacher training in isiXhosa education / curriculum studies, which includes isiXhosa for communicative purposes, in preparation for service in South African schools and even beyond where possible;
  • Mentoring postgraduate students in the Bachelor of Education (BEd) Honours programme specialising in intermediate phase language education with their respective academic research projects;
  • Promoting or co-promoting students in their master’s and / or doctoral research;
  • Teaching or co-teaching at least one isiXhosa-related semester module in the BEd Honours programme;
  • Actively participating in departmental activities relevant to this post level, such as being a committee member of relevant programmes, module coordination, taking up of administrative responsibilities relevant to the module, presentations during departmental key functions such as orientation sessions, open day, etc.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in language education;
  • A minimum qualification in intermediate phase majoring in isiXhosa education;
  • Experience in curriculum design at undergraduate level, specifically for isiXhosa, and at postgraduate level, for isiXhosa education;
  • Relevant experience in school and higher education training;
  • Experience of supervision in programmes of teaching and learning of isiXhosa or African languages at postgraduate level, including experience in successful supervision at honours level;
  • Good administrative, interpersonal, and communication skills, and being prepared to be involved in departmental activities;
  • An advanced level of isiXhosa education, including language structures and conventions of isiXhosa.

Senior Lecturer/ Lecturer

Organization: Physics

Duties

  • Teaching and coordinating undergraduate and postgraduate modules;
  • Actively conducting research and publishing in peer-reviewed journals in a field aligned to one of the Department’s research focus areas in astrophysics;
  • Recruiting and supervising postgraduate students in astrophysics;
  • Establishing a research group in a field aligned to one of the research focus areas in the Department, with strong involvement in either HERA telescope (Hydrogen Epoch Reionisation Array) or MeerKAT (SKA Precursor) telescope;
  • Securing research funding;
  • Participating in academically relevant departmental and Faculty activities, as required.

Requirements

  • A PhD in physics, astronomy, or applied mathematics (with research focus on astrophysics or cosmology);
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English.

For appointment as lecturer:

  • Teaching experience in physics (as lecturer, or teaching assistant/tutor at tertiary level);
  • An active research interest in astrophysics and kosmology, with particular emphasis on the epoch of reionisation, and Pulsar Timing Array.

For appointment as senior lecturer:

  • Proven ability and commitment to teaching physics at both undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • Evidence of recent research in astrophysics and cosmology, with particular emphasis on the epoch of reionisation, and Pulsar Timing Array;
  • Evidence of a sustained publication output as first author in high quality international journals;
  • Proof of successful postgraduate supervision as main supervisor, at least at master’s level;
  • Proven ability to seek external funding.

Applicants invited for interviews will be expected to present a lecture on their recent research to demonstrate their knowledge and communication skills.

Lecturer: Geographical Information Technology

Organization: Department of Geography and Environmental Studies

Duties

  • Academic leadership in GIT;
  • Academic programme development;
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in GIT;
  • Postgraduate supervision in the application of GIT in human or environmental geographical research;
  • Maintaining a productive research programme of GIT applications in environmental studies, urban geography, tourism and / or earth science disciplines;
  • Publication of research results in accredited journals and presenting results at conferences;
  • Securing research funding;
  • Actively participating in all departmental activities and research projects;
  • Academic interaction with the community.

Requirements

  • A master’s degree in geomatics / geoinformatics;
  • A growing academic profile in GIT;
  • The ability to lecture in GIT;
  • The ability to supervise postgraduate students in GIT research;
  • Excellent communication and language skills in English (knowledge of other official South African languages will be an added advantage)
