Postbank has announced that the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) gold cards will be valid for December and subsequent months. This means that social assistance recipients can use their card as usual.
This important development means that millions of welfare recipients will not have to switch their SASSA Gold Card for cards from other banks.
SASSA Gold Cards Will Remain Valid in December and Beyond
Paying social grants through SASSA Gold Cards has over the years empowered marginalized populations and facilitated their access to their finances, especially in rural areas where traditional banking infrastructure can be limited.
Ensuring the functionality of SASSA gold cards after December 2023 is one of the most important points of Postbank’s commitment to provide convenient and reasonably priced to vulnerable people,” said the bank’s spokesperson, Dr. Bongani Diako. He warned beneficiaries not to fall prey to misleading information about their cards and retailers that are not honest.
Beneficiaries are advised to ignore misleading information that may lead them to switch to other card products claiming that SASSA Gold Cards have been replaced. Postbank is the only bank authorized to replace SASSA Gold Cards.

No retailer or shop has the right to force beneficiaries to buy: SASSA beneficiaries are advised to report any retailer or shop that forces them to buy goods before paying SASSA grants. You are entitled to the full amount of your SASSA grant and you have them all. As a Beneficiary you have a right to use the money as you see fit, that’s what you look at,” Diako said. The spokesperson talked about the benefits of the gold card.
